The GATA family of transcription factors share a conserved zinc finger DNA-binding domain and are capable of binding the WGATAR consensus sequence. GATA1 is erythroid-specific and is essential for normal erythropeisis. By comparison, GATA2 is expressed at high levels in hematopoeitic progenitors, including early erythroid cells, but is strong repressed during erythroblast differentiaion.
