Histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) is a class I histone deacetylase that catalyzes the removal of the acetyl group on lysine residues of the N-terminus of the core histones H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. HDAC2 is a component of multiple deacetylating complexes such as Sin3, NuRD, and CoRest that function to repress gene transcription. Alternate names for HDAC2 include HD2, RPD3, and YAF1.
